• Business Education Partnership Quarterly Update

    March 2019
Goal of the BEP is to provide updates to Chamber members as to events and clubs in our schools that Chamber members can support or would find interesting to be made aware of. It provides a sharing of information so we can work to support each other for the good of our students.

    DECA Update :
We are grateful for Penny Thompson, DECA Coordinator, for this update while she is out on medical leave. Her dedication is unstoppable. Penny reported 11 students advanced onto the international DECA competition. Their projects included an Entrepreneurship Promotional Plan and Learn and Earn Project. Students are competing in Marketing Management Team Event, business law and ethics team event, principles of hospitality and for our Gold Chapter Project we have a student that qualified to attend the Leadership Academy. So proud of our DECA chapter and state competitors. 11 students will be advancing on to Internationals this April in Orlando-including Ines Gilkes and Ally Gundrum 2nd place in Business Law and Ethics; Tess Purin in Principles of Hospitality; Molly Maguire and Kate Geisler for their first-place finish in Learn and Earn project; Sydney Flaherty, Mariah Lesar, and Emma Thompson for a 6th place Entrepreneurship Promotion Project; Quinn Lightfoot for the Gold Chapter Project; and Brandon Wilson and Gracie Hamburg who will be teaming up for a 4th place finish in Marketing Management.
Spring wraps up quickly with a Share event at Culvers on March 18. DECA will be asking businesses to consider helping to sponsor travel scholarships for students.

    Superintendent Update:
Renovations to the High School are moving along well. Currently we have a cost savings for the project which is also on time. The Middle School’s roof membrane has been fixed and repairs to gym floor completed. Exciting new interior courtyard has been redesigned. With the cost savings they are starting to look at other projects that could be addressed but they would have to fall under the original purpose of the loan which is safety, security and updates to building and furnishings. The School Board is working hard to be good stewards of the money afforded to the project. Dr Salnero invited BEP committee members to join him on March 19 for a tour of the construction area.

    Business in Your Backyard:
Sarah Starka reported the date for this will be April 29 and she is looking forward to having students and teachers see local businesses.

Youth Apprenticeship Program has approximately 25 students in placement at various area businesses. There has been a Fire Safety Training program that has 5 graduates. Any business interest in providing an apprenticeship should contact Penny Thompson of Sarah Straka. Currently, the school is interested in partnering with a business that would support students wanting to obtain a CNA degree.
