Join riksspelman Micke Löfroth for a two-day workshop exploring how to use time signature, tempo, and rhythm when playing polskor so that dancers can easily move along with the music. Micke will demonstrate playing methods and present polskor from Dalarna, such as the bingsjöpolska, orsapolska, rättvikspolska, bodapolska, and älvdalspolska.
This course is open to all levels, but Micke recommends that participants be comfortable with their instrument and already able to play about ten songs to get the most out of the instruction. The songs and techniques will be taught by ear, and participants will come away with a better sense of how to play for dancing and a sense of the different musical “dialects” from the fascinating and diverse region of Dalarna in rural western Sweden.
Micke Löfroth started playing music when he was a young child and has become a recognized and respected figure in Swedish folk music circles. He has traveled throughout Dalarna, Uppland, Värmland, Jämtland, Hälsingland, and Södra Lappland, learning from masters and playing on invitation for numerous dances, concerts, and festivals. Micke is especially steeped in the music of Dalarna, having learned from master Dalarna fiddlers like Petters-Erik and Päkkos Gustaf. Micke has honed his craft in his 40-year musical career and has risen to the level of riksspelman, a title reserved for the most esteemed bearers of Swedish musical tradition and one that he proudly shares with about 300 other living riksspelmän in Sweden today.
