The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society and Driftless Historium is proud to host accomplished journalist and author Bill Stokes, who will read brief excerpts from his recently published historical fiction work, "Margaret's War." He will also discuss the true history of the novel's setting, Barron County's WWII German POW camp --and other POW camps in Wisconsin. This event will take place in the Historium's Community Education Room on Thursday, August 29 at 6:00pm. It is free and open to the public. Bill Stokes grew up on a small dairy farm between Barron and Rice Lake, Wisconsin. He began his official writing career as an outdoor writer and general reporter for the Stevens Point Daily Journal. From there, his illustrious career included residencies with the Wisconsin State Journal (1961-1969), the Milwaukee Journal (1969-1982) and the Chicago Tribune (1982-1993), followed by a well-deserved retirement augmented with free-lance projects. During his long journalism career, Bill won several awards, including the Ernie Pyle Memorial Award from Scripps-Howard News Service in 1972 and the Distinguished Service to Journalism Award in 1983. His work has appeared in many national publications, among them Readers Digest, Outdoor Life and Sports Afield. He has compiled three anthologies of his newspaper writing and authored two children’s books. "Margaret's War" will be available for sale and signing by the author immediately before and following the 6:00pm program. Reservations are not required. Call 608-437-6486 for more information.
