    About a week ago the people in my county received a very different type of emergency communication. I'm in a popular hurricane area so those who signed up for emergency text messages are no stranger to them. However, even when we were evacuated due to Hurricane Irma we didn't receive anything like this. The first line of the text message was “be kind.” That took me aback and caused me to laugh a little. Be kind sounded a little like what our parents might’ve said to us as we were going off to kindergarten or--more appropriately--middle school. Most of us probably think of ourselves as nice people. Being told to be kind seemed like a no-brainer. But being kind is more than just being nice. Read more

    If you have had time to look in your email inbox recently, it's likely cluttered with messages from big brands telling you what they’re doing as we're facing the global pandemic of COVID-19. The point behind these communications is to quell fear and reassure people that it’s safe to patronize these businesses. If you have a physical location, it's likely you need to write one too. People are scared and when fear is a motivator, logic goes out the window. Business owners must convey important messaging to customers or risk losing them. Read more

    f your parents were business owners, they may have belonged to the local chamber. If they did, it was likely one of the first things they did when they opened their business. They hung an open sign on the window and applied for chamber membership. People of that age knew that was how business got done. There was only one way to network, in person and the chamber offered that in spades. But we're quickly approaching a new decade and there's a lot more to running a business than simply attending a networking event. You may think you no longer need the chamber. But...     Guess what? You need an email list. Even if you’re only occasionally sending out emails and can’t/won’t commit to a newsletter, you MUST HAVE a list. I’m not even exaggerating or trying to scare you. In today’s business climate, most products and services aren’t instantaneous decisions. Generally, the person making the purchasing decision thinks about it before they even step foot in your place of business. If you’re not in touch with them on a regular basis, you won’t be on their mind when they decide to buy. Read more

    Have you ever noticed just how many bland posters there are out there on social media? They post only about themselves and not even interesting things about themselves. It’s almost better if posters like those stay off of social media altogether because they’re certainly not building any fans and that kind of posting is not getting people to know, like, and trust them. Their social media efforts are wasted and since we don’t want yours to be, we’re putting together a list of things to post about that will make people see just how amazing you are.     Storytelling makes for amazing marketing because people don't realize they're being marketed to. They're pulled into the story. They develop an emotional attachment to your business and they stick around for the resolution. Good storytelling casts your customers as the heroes of their stories. You want their successes and triumphs to be told because you want potential customers to hear the stories and think that they can do those things too. When you cast your business as the wise sage who helps the hero achieve their goals, you become important to the solution. That way people who are considering buying from you understand the valuable role that you play even while you are highlighting the accomplishments of others. Read more
